Outward Flight to Khartum
Upon arrival at the Airport, support with entry formalities and transfer to your comfortable ***+ hotel.
1. Day: MI Khartum BLD
During the morning we visit the National Museum with its beautiful exhibits of the old Egyptian, Kushite and Nubian periods. We will also discover the wonderful frescoes of the byzantine Faras, which were saved from the flooding of the Nile. Afterwards, we visit the Museum of Khalifa, the tomb of the Mahadi. After the full immersion into the daily life by visiting the Omdurman market, we will discuss the following days in the desert.
2. Day: Khartoum - Bayuda Desert - Tamtam BLD
After breakfast, we start our adventure into the desert. The picture is characterized by open planes spotted with occasional bushes. We will have the possibility to have a tea break in one of the small roadhouses. At lunchtime, we will have succeeded our first cruise through the Bayuda desert and spend the night in our tents around the location of Tamtam.
3. Day: Tamtam - Old Dongola – Nubian Desert BLD
After breakfast we cross the Nile and head towards Old Dongola, where we discover witnesses of the old Christian kingdom of Makuria. Besides exploring houses and palaces of long gone times, we can also discover old Islamic tombs. We continue our trip on the sandy road towards Kerma. Overnight in the Nubian desert.
4. Day: Selem - Kerma – Tumbus BLD
On our trip via Selem to Kerma, we will discover many different landscapes. Especially the Nubian houses and villages are of particular interest: sometimes the houses are richly decorated with ornaments, in other places we can find wonderful wall-paintings with natural colors. The Nubian women put a big effort into the design of their houses. One thing, however, is common to all of the houses: the unrivalled hospitality of their inhabitants. In Kerma, we will visit the Defuffa, one of the oldest temple structures of humanity! After having learnt more about this astonishing culture, we will visit Tumbus, where we discover the laying statue of King Taharqa. Overnight in tent near Tumbus
5. Day: Tumbus - Sesebi – Wawa BLD
After breakfast, we continue our journey on to Delgo, where we will cross the Nile by ferry and continue towards Sesebi, an Egyptian outpost at the times of Pharao Echnaton. In the afternoon, we will reach Wawa, where we spend the night in a traditional Nubian house and get an inside into the way of life of the hospital Nubians.
6. Day: Soleb - Seddenga - 3. Nile-cataract BLD
In the morning, we cross the Nile again by boat and continue on to Soleb. There, we visit a temple of Amun with columns resembling those of the temple in the Egyptian Luxor. We then drive to Sadenga to visit the remains of the temple dedicated to queen Teje. After lunch, we drive to the 3. Nile-cataract, where we will enjoy the breath-taking view over the lifeline of Sudan and Egypt. Overnight in our tents in the desert.
7. Day: Jebel Barkal BLD
After breakfast, we again cross the Nubian Desert and remain amazed at the contrast offered by the desert after the lush vegetation around the river. Nach dem Frühstück durchqueren wir erneut die Nubische Wüste. The landscape loses more and more green, only a few bushes and trees can survive in this hostile environment. Our trip ends after ca. 260 Km across the desert at Jebel Barkal. Overnight in tent.
8. Day: Jebel Barkal - El Kurru - Nuri - Al Ghazali BLD
In the morning, we take a walk on the Plateau of Jebel Barkal, considered to be the holy mountain of god Amun. From here, we can enjoy an incomparable view over the Pyramids and the temple of Amun. After having taken a stroll through the remains of the temple, we continue to El Kurru and descend into the tombs of the Kushite Kings. The elaborate wall paintings explain the path from life to death and depict the rich imagination of afterlife. After this visit, we cross the Nile and visit the Pyramid field of Nuri, which is situated North of Jebel Barkal. After having admired the particular architecture of these Pyramids, we continue our journey through the Bayuda Desert in the direction of Atbara. On the road, we visit the remains of an old Christian monastery which is situated in the Al Ghazaly oasis. We spend the night somewhere nearby in the desert.
9. Day: Al Ghazali – Meroe BLD
On our journey through the Bayuda Desert, we will meet some shepherds of the Bisharim Nomads, who live here in small family units and farm their animals in the scares vegetation of the dried out Wadis. After a long journey on unpaved and paved roads we reach again the shore of the Nile – extended watering systems allow for the expansion of the fields far away from the river. We cross the Nile – the old ferry has been replaced by a modern bridge- and reach the Pyramids of Meroe in the perfect evening light for memorable pictures. We spend the night right nearby in our tents.
10. Day: Meroe – Musawwarat BLD
The Pyramids of Meroe will draw all our attention on this morning. After an extended stroll through the necropolis we visit the old residential area of the kings of Meroe. We then continue on to Musawwarat, the biggest archaeological site in Sudan, a huge temple area where rare representations of elephants have been found. For the night, we build up our tents for the last time.
11. Day: Naga - Omdurman – Khartum BLD
After a visit of Mussawarat and a short drive, we reach the archaeological site of Naga. We see goats feeding between the antique Lyon Temple and the Roman „Kiosk“- unique witnesses of an outstanding past. Right besides these temples, a much visited well is point of contact for the shepherds and nomads of the region. In the course of the afternoon, we get back to Khartoum and to our ***+ hotel. During our last common dinner, we can remember the fascinating experiences of the last days of our trip through deserts and history. After dinner, transfer to the airport and return flight.
